Prayer is the expression of our dependence on God through requests. It is more glorious to be a giver than a getter. God is always the Giver (Acts 17.25). He loves to show the fullness of his grace in meeting the needs of humble, dependent, praying people, because it magnifies his riches and displays His glory. God ordains prayer because he wants us to see him as self-sufficient and ourselves as completely needy. In John 14:13 Jesus says, “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” Ask for things in my name! Why? So that the Father may be glorified. So he may look as glorious as he really is. The greatest invitation in the world is extended to us, and that is why we pray.

Various Prayers
Prayer 36 Assurance of Being Heard
“You have taught and commanded us to pray in thy manner and have promised to hear us. So we hope and are sure, O dearest Father, that for the sake of the truth you will graciously and mercifully grant us all these requests. Amen.” ~ Martin Luther
Prayer 58 For Universal Peace
Grant us blessed unity and peace among all nations. Preserve us from all strife, hatred, and warfare, that we may eat our daily bread and receive bodily nourishment undisturbed and to your praise. Give understanding and a loyal will to all kings, princes, lords, and councils and to all positions of government, that they may rule their people in a happy and peaceful way. Guard all citizens against rebellion and disobedience. Amen ~ Martin Luther
Prayer 60 for Relief of the Distressed
Graciously comfort and tend all who are imprisoned, hungry, thirsty, naked, and miserable; also all widows, orphans, sick, and sorrowing. In brief, give us our daily bread, so that Christ may abide in us and we in him, forever, and that with him we may worthily bear the name Christian. Amen. ~ Martin Luther
Prayer 78 for Protection of Home and Family
Oh, God, grant the people—in the city and country—be diligent and display charity and loyalty toward each other. Give us favorable weather and good harvest. I commend to you my house and property, wife and children. Grant that I may manage and guide them well, supporting and educating them as a Christian should. Defend us against the Destroyer and all his wicked angels who would do us harm and mischief in this life. Amen. ~ Martin Luther

Prayer Against Oppression
Almighty God, who hast created us in thine own image: Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
For the Old and Infirm
For the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Prayer for the Poor and Neglected
Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Prayer for the Human Family
O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For Community and Nation
For our Bishop, and for all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For our President, for the leaders of the nations, and for all in authority, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For this city (town, village, _______), for every city and community, and for those who live in them, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Clement of Rome (Beliefnet.com)
We beseech thee, Master, to be our helper and protector.
Save the afflicted among us; have mercy on the lowly;
raise up the fallen; appear to the needy; heal the ungodly;
restore the wanderers of thy people;
feed the hungry; ransom our prisoners;
raise up the sick; comfort the faint-hearted.
St. Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console,
not so much to be understood as to understand,
not so much to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we awake to eternal life.

People: But because you command and constrain us to pray in the name of Jesus Christ, we are obedient.

People: Graciously turn aside every false doctrine and all sinful living in which your holy name is blasphemed and profaned. Let us be devoted to prayer always.
Leader: When prayer doesn’t come easy for us, let us consider ourselves normally fallen and sinful. And let us fight. Let us not let our sins and weaknesses and worldly inclinations rule us.
People: Let us be devoted to prayer always.
Leader: Be glorified in the world:
People: Be glorified in the Church.
